Kiki Smith
Tracing an artistic practice through the dissection of the body and its symbolic forms

/ About the project
A biographical book on Kiki Smith, exploring how the body operates as a central axis within her practice. Deeply rooted in anatomy, vulnerability, and transformation, her work became the starting point for structuring the narrative. Titled The Skin, the book unfolds through chapters centered around recurring themes such as organs and fluids, sexuality and life, death, and ritual, using the body not only as subject matter but as a framework for organizing meaning.
The publication is entirely typographic and built around the concept of dissection. The layout fragments the content into layers, placing artwork specifications and references in the margins as annotations that move from small details to broader ideas. This structure mirrors the way a body is studied, piece by piece. The typographic system differentiates voices across the publication, from quotes and dates to works and notes, guiding the reading experience while reinforcing the analytical approach. The result is a book that examines an artistic practice by breaking it apart and reassembling it through an editorial lens.
